What is Marburg Virus
Marburg virus is a hemorrhagic fever virus of the Filoviridae family of viruses and a member of the species , genus Marburgvirus. Marburg virus causes Marburg virus disease in humans and primates, a form of viral hemorrhagic fever. The virus is considered to be extremely dangerous.

A few weeks ago the Ghana health service confirmed the Marburg virus endemic in communities around the Ashanti region. Sad news reaching us today indicates that, two people have died of the Marburg virus with over 98 others under quarantine.
The viral disease is allegedly transmitted from bats onto humans and and it’s mode of transmission is through bodily contacts with fluids and excreter from infected bats and persons.
It is said to be a very deadly virus that it leaves it’s victims with severe headache, fever, muscle pains, vomiting blood and bleeding very similar to Ebola virus.
The Ghana health service has advised Ghanaians from eating rodents and bats or visiting caves that habour these Marburg Virus carriers. The viral disease was first suspected in Adansi North district of the Ashanti region and Sawla district of the savannah region and the infected persons have been quarantined to prevent continues spread.
SYMPTOMS OF MARBURG VIRUS
Symptoms become increasingly severe and can include
PREVENT OF MARBURG VIRUS
Avoid direct contact with blood, saliva, vomit, urine and other bodily fluids of people with Marburg virus disease or unknown illnesses
- Marburg/virus disease can spread from infected animals such as bats on direct contact with blood and other body fluids including faces of bats.
- The risk of bat-to-human transmission can be reduced by avoiding exposure to mines or caves inhabited by fruit bat colonies, All animal products (blood and meat) should be thoroughly cooked before consumption. There is currently no vaccine available.
- The public is therefore advised to avoid contact with such animals; Marburg virus disease can also spread from an infected person to another person. The public is therefore advised to avoid direct contact with persons showing the symptoms indicated above and to encourage such persons to report to the nearest health facility for appropriate assessment,
Is there vaccine for Marburg Virus?
Are there vaccines or treatments, or ongoing Marburg Virus? There are currently no specific therapeutics or Vaccine for Marburg virus. However, supportive care including rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids can improve survival.
