2. A researcher surveyed some students to find out their views about the double track system. The results of the survey are shown in the table
Class | In favour | Opposed | Undecided |
JHS 3 | 24 | 3 | 3 |
SHS 1 | 20 | 2 | 8 |
SHS 2 | 19 | 6 | 5 |
SHS 3 | 18 | 3 | 9 |
Use the information to answer questions i. and ii
i. What fraction of the students who participated in the survey in SHS 3?
ii. A newspaper repeater randomly selected a student from this survey to interview. What Is the probability the student selected is in favour of the double track system
ANSWERS
i The total number of students who participated in the survey in SHS 3 is:
Total number in SHS 3 = 18 + 3 + 9 = 30 students
Therefore, the fraction of students who participated in the survey in SHS 3 is:
Fraction in SHS 3 = (number in SHS 3) / (total number in survey) = 30 / (24 + 3 + 20 + 2 + 8 + 19 + 6 + 5 + 18 + 3 + 9) = 30 / 111 = 10 / 37
So, the fraction of students who participated in the survey in SHS 3 is 10/37.
ii. To find the probability that a student selected is in favor of the double track system, we need to add up the number of students who are in favor of the system across all classes and divide by the total number of students in the survey. From the table, we have:
Number in favor of the system = 24 + 20 + 19 + 18 = 81
Total number of students in survey = 24 + 3 + 3 + 20 + 2 + 8 + 19 + 6 + 5 + 18 + 3 + 9 = 120
So, the probability that a student selected is in favor of the double track system is:
Probability = (number in favor of system) / (total number of students)
= 81 / 120
= 0.675
Therefore, the probability that a student selected is in favor of the double track system is 0.675 or 67.5%.

3. Two classes were given a mathematics test. The first class had 25 students and the their mean score was 86%. The second class had 15 students and their mean score was 94%. If the teacher combined the test scores of the both classes. Calculate the mean for the combined scores
ANSWERS
To calculate the mean for the combined scores, we first need to find the total score for both classes:
Total score for first class = 25 x 86% = 2150 Total score for second class = 15 x 94% = 1410
Total score for both classes = 2150 + 1410 = 3560
Next, we need to find the total number of students:
Total number of students = 25 + 15 = 40
Finally, we can calculate the mean for the combined scores:
Mean = Total score / Total number of students
Mean = 3560 / 40
Mean = 89%
Therefore, the mean for the combined scores is 89%.
4. In a science class, the average score on a test was 75%. The first group of students who took the test had 20 students and an average score of 80%. The second group of students had 15 students and an average score of 70%. What was the total number of students who took the test?
ANSWERS
To solve this problem, we can use the formula:
Total Average = (Sum of Scores) / (Total Number of Students)
Let x be the total number of students who took the test.
Then, the sum of scores for the first group is 20 * 80 = 1600.
The sum of scores for the second group is 15 * 70 = 1050.
The sum of scores for both groups is 1600 + 1050 = 2650.
So, the total average is:
75 = 2650 / x
Multiplying both sides by x, we get:
75x = 2650
Dividing both sides by 75, we get:
x = 35
Therefore, the total number of students who took the test is 35.

5. The average salary of a company’s employees is $50,000. The first group of employees has 25 members and an average salary of $55,000. The second group has 15 members and an average salary of $40,000. What is the total number of employees in the company?
Answer
Let x be the total number of employees in the company.
Then, the sum of salaries for the first group is 25 * 55,000 = 1,375,000.
The sum of salaries for the second group is 15 * 40,000 = 600,000.
The sum of salaries for both groups is 1,375,000 + 600,000 = 1,975,000.
So, the total average salary is:
50,000 = 1,975,000 / x
Multiplying both sides by x, we get:
50,000x = 1,975,000
Dividing both sides by 50,000, we get:
x = 39.5
Therefore, the total number of employees in the company is 39.5, which can be rounded up to 40.
6.Two light are turned on at the same time. One blinks every 8 minutes and the other blinks every 12 minutes. If they blink together at half past seven o’clock in the evening, when is the next time they will blink together
ANSWER
The time taken for the first light to blink is 8 minutes and for the second light is 12 minutes. To find the next time both lights will blink together, we need to find the LCM (Least Common Multiple) of the given time intervals.
LCM of 8 and 12 is 24.
This means that both lights will blink together after 24 minutes from half past seven o’clock in the evening.
Half past seven is 30 minutes past 7 o’clock. So, the next time they will blink together is 24 minutes after 7:30 pm, which is:
7:30 pm + 24 minutes = 7:54 pm.
Therefore, the next time both lights will blink together is 7:54 pm.
7. A rectangular playing is 20 meters long. A straight path is cut across the field along side of it diagonals. If the length of the path is 25 metres, how wide is the playing field
ANSWER
Let’s call the width of the playing field “w”. Then, using the Pythagorean theorem, we can set up an equation:
w^2 + 20^2 = 25^2
Simplifying and solving for w, we get:
w^2 + 400 = 625
w^2 = 225
w = 15
Therefore, the width of the playing field is 15 meters.

- A bag contains 5 red marbles, 3 green marbles, and 2 blue marbles. What is the ratio of red marbles to green marbles to blue marbles?
SOLUTION
The ratio of red marbles to green marbles to blue marbles is 5:3:2.
2. If 2/3 of a class are boys and the rest are girls, what is the ratio of boys to girls?
Solution: Let B be the number of boys and G be the number of girls.
We know that B/(B+G) = 2/3,
so we can solve for G/B: B/(B+G) = 2/3 3B = 2B + 2G B = 2G
Therefore, the ratio of boys to girls is 2:1.
- A recipe calls for 3 cups of flour for every 2 cups of sugar. If you want to use 6 cups of sugar, how much flour do you need?
Solution:
We can set up a proportion to solve for the amount of flour:
We can set up a proportion to solve for the amount of flour:
3 cups flour / 2 cups sugar = x cups flour / 6 cups sugar
Cross-multiplying, we get:
2(3 cups flour) = x(6 cups sugar)
6 cups flour = 6x
x = 1
Therefore, we need 1 cup of flour for every 2 cups of sugar.
4. The length of a rectangle is 4 times its width. If the width is 6 meters, what is the length?
ANSWER
Solution: Let L be the length of the rectangle.
We know that L = 4W, where W is the width.
Substituting W = 6, we get: L = 4(6) = 24
Therefore, the length of the rectangle is 24 meters.
5. A fruit punch recipe calls for a ratio of 2 cups of orange juice to 3 cups of pineapple juice. If you want to make 10 cups of fruit punch, how much of each juice do you need?
ANSWER
We can set up a proportion to solve for the amount of each juice:
2 cups orange juice / 3 cups pineapple juice = x cups orange juice / (10 – x) cups pineapple juice Cross-multiplying,
we get:
2(10 – x) = 3x
20 – 2x = 3x
5x = 20
x = 4
Therefore, we need 4 cups of orange juice and 6 cups of pineapple juice.
