HOW TO UPGRADE FROM PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER

Most primary School teachers have tried to upgrade from the primary school with diploma certificate to senior high school teachers. If this is your major problem, then let’s read this article.

There are three ways a primary school teacher can upgrade his or her certificate from Primary thus (Diploma in Basic Education) to Senior High School (Bachelor of Education Programmes)

Being Full Time Student at the University

A teacher from primary school will wait for the number of maximum years to qualify for study leave before he or she can apply for study leave pay to continue his or her education at the university level.

Per Ghana Education Service (G.E.S.), a teacher can only qualify for study leave with pay if and only he or she meet these requirements: “Being on the field for teaching for more than three (3) years”.

The study leave with pay is always for four (4) years period to be at the university, which is eight (8) semesters for learning at the university.

After the study leave with pay is granted, you can choose a course which is most relevant to GES approve courses at the High Schools.

Through Sandwich Mode:

Most Primary teachers know that they can only upgrade to the top up of the Diploma in Basic Education to get Post Diploma Basic Education which is the same as (Bachelor of Education Basic Education) at the sandwich mode. The answer is Perfectly NO. There are a lot of Courses a Primary School teacher can purse at the sandwich session to upgrade from primary school teacher to high school teacher.

For University of Education, Winneba and Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) is having a course which runs the same eight (8) semesters like the full-time student which they were granted study leave with pay.

After completion of sandwich program primary school teacher can apply for high school teaching job through his or her Director of Education at the district level.

Through Distance Session:

Most of Ghanaian universities distance session is a weekend program. Depending on the university you will choose, some have their lectures every two weeks, some also have their lectures every weekend depending on the time table.

For the distance sessions Primary school teachers should choose a program which is also four (4) years and eight semesters from the university. After completion of a full four (4) degree program with eight (8) semesters, primary school teacher can apply for high school teaching job through his or district Director

Note this:

Teachers with first degree in Basic Education or Post Diploma in Basic Education do not qualify to teach at the high school and they do not also qualify for study with pay. This is because

1. The minimum certificate for study leave with pay in GES is Diploma
2. Those with the first degree also have gotten their degree which they have used for salary upgrade so they do not qualify
