Bring Back Old Calendar System Got SHS – Former GES Director To Govt

As an SHS Teacher, Parents or Stakeholders Do You Support This Idea Or Not

Charles Aheto Tsegah, former Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has recommended that the GES and Ministry of Education should switch back to the old calendar system for second-cycle schools. According to a gbconline.com report, Mr. Aheto-Tsegah believes that the current semester system is confusing, disjointed, and not beneficial to students. He is calling for measures to increase contact hours in order to cover the curriculum adequately.

Mr. Aheto-Tsegah argues that the current academic year is too short, which is not conducive to effective learning. He believes that the new system does not provide students with enough time to cover the necessary content, leading to disruptions in the academic calendar, with some schools starting at different times and students missing out on essential instructional time.

The former GES Director General urges the Ministry of Education and the GES to consider his recommendations when making decisions about the academic calendar.

As a teacher in Ghana’s second cycle of education, my primary concern is the academic calendar changes made by the Ghana Education Service (GES) leaders and the Ministry of Education. In my opinion, the parents play a significant role in their children’s lives compared to teachers at the secondary school level. My research and experience have shown that without students, there would be no schools.

I urge other SHS teachers to share their grievances on this platform so we can push for the best possible outcome. The leaders of GES and MoE are not in the classroom and may not have experience with the current students we are teaching at the SHS level. Let us come together to advocate for the best interests of our students and ensure that their academic calendars are not changed arbitrarily.
