On Thursday, April 13th, 2023, the National Teaching Council’s management authorized three studies to assess the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) and Teacher Professionalism in Ghana.

The event took place at Alisa Hotel in Accra, with the aim of examining the quality and trend analysis of the licensure examination and teacher professionalism and practice in Ghana.

During the meeting, David Prah, the Deputy Director General for TVET service, suggested increasing the pass mark for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination.

The current 50% pass mark for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination is equivalent to a 50% competency level for licensed teachers, according to him. Therefore, he proposes that the pass mark should be raised to 70%.

During the event, he expressed his satisfaction that the teacher union leaders were present and went on to question the credibility of the current pass rate and percentage. He argued that allowing a teacher to enter a classroom with a 50% competency level is problematic.

He stated, “A 50% deficit to enter the classroom is very disastrous. We need to revise it” and emphasized the need to increase the pass mark.
