The academic year for Ghana’s public basic schools is coming to a close. The first quarter of the 2023 academic year officially ended on Friday, March 24th, 2023. The second term commenced on April 3rd, 2023, and will continue until June 15th, 2023, with the term ending on June 26th, 2023. Below are the official reopening dates for basic schools.
To align with the previous academic schedule, the 2023 academic calendar has been adjusted. The current academic year will conclude on September 15th, 2023, for both basic schools and secondary schools (SHS). Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, basic schools and SHS had their summer vacations in August or September. However, due to the pandemic, the school year for all educational institutions, including tertiary institutions, underwent changes.
Reopening Date for Basic Schools in Ghana
The Ghana Education Service (GES) is making efforts to restore the traditional academic calendar. Basic schools will only have a short 11-day break. Students will be on vacation from June 15th to June 26th, 2023. The third term will then begin on June 27th, 2023, and conclude on September 17th, 2023.
JHS 3 pupils are encouraged to focus more on their studies as the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) approaches.
It is crucial for all candidates to ensure that their personal information is accurately captured and that they are registered for the correct subjects.
School authorities are advised to register candidates for the appropriate Ghanaian Language and Basic Design Technology options. Similar to the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), special arrangements will be made for candidates with special educational needs.
The 2023 BECE will officially commence on Monday, August 7th, 2023, and conclude on Friday, August 11th, 2023.
This year’s exams will be held earlier compared to previous years. In 2022, the examination took place from October 17th to October 21st. The West African Examination Council (WAEC) is yet to release an official examination timetable and dates for prospective candidates.
The August 2023 BECE will be the final examination using the old curriculum. In 2024, the standard-based curriculum will be implemented for the examination. The GES has instructed all head teachers not to retain any student who was in form two at the end of the academic year, as it would disadvantage them.
